In this study we present a novel, mechanistic model to predict effects of Cu on aquatic invertebrate populations (Lymnaea stagnalis – the great pond snail).

Lymnaea stagnalis is particularly sensitive species to various metals and the precise mechanisms behind the metal toxicity are not fully understood. We extrapolated Cu toxicity effects from various studies and food sources to the population level using a mechanistic population model.

This model is the first in a series of models being developed at ARCHE Consulting and the University of Ghent to promote the use of ecological models as an innovative approach to chemical risk assessment.
