Patrick Van Sprang graduated as Master of Science in Engineering (Environmental Technology) at Ghent University in 1988. At the university of Ghent (1994-2000) he was responsible for the research group aquatic ecotoxicology. He is the co-founder of EURAS, a spin-off consultancy company specialized in environmental risk assessment. Patrick Van Sprang has over 15 years of experience in environmental consultancy, environmental regulation and academia and is the main author of the environmental part of several risk assessments and contributed to the Metal Risk Assessment Guidance document (MERAG). Currently, as managing director of ARCHE Consulting, Patrick Van Sprang is providing risk assessment services to numerous companies, federations and regulatory agencies.
Marnix Vangheluwe (Managing Director)

Marnix Vangheluwe graduated as Master of Science in Engineering (Biochemistry) at Hogeschool Gent in 1989 and obtained also a master in environmental sanitation (Ghent University) in 1991. At the university of Ghent (1992-2000) he was responsible for the research group sediment ecotoxicology. In 1996 he was the co-founder of the spin-off consultancy firm EURAS at the university of Ghent specialized in environmental risk assessment . Now as, managing director of ARCHE Consulting he is closely involved in numerous risk assessments ( flame retardants, metals) and classification of metals and alloys. Marnix Vangheluwe is also the main author also the Metal Risk Assessment Guidance document (MERAG) and the official REACH Appendix R.7.13-2 Environmental risk assessment for metals and metal compounds. He is also a key expert on waste and sediment related issues.

Dr. Frederik Verdonck obtained his PhD degree in Bio-engineering on probabilistic risk assessment at Ghent University (Belgium). At ARCHE his main expertise area comprises the implementation and application of statistical and modelling approaches in exposure, effects and risk/safety assessment. Currently, Dr Frederik Verdonck is the leading expert in developing and implementing new tools in the fleld of exposure scenario building.
Dagobert Heijerick (Senior Project Scientist)

Dagobert Heijerick graduated as Master of Science in Engineering (Environmental Technology) at Ghent University in 1994, and also obtained a degree in Environmental Sciences and Technologies at the same institute in 1995. At Ghent University (1996-2002) he was primarily responsible for several research projects related to metal toxicity, bioavailability and the development of bioavailability models for metals. At ARCHE Consulting Dagobert Heijerick is lead scientist involved in risk assessments of metals (monitoring data and effects assessment) and actively participated in the development of bioavailability models for site-specific risk assessments. Ìn addition his expertise area encompasses classification and labelling (EU CLP and GHS), the collection and evaluation of available information, data gap analysis, IUCLID 5 input and derivation of the hazard treshold levels for different environmental compartments.

An Ghekiere graduated as Master of Biochemistry in 2001 and obtained her PhD in Bio-engineering on endocrine disruption in invertebrates at Ghent University (Belgium) in 2006. From 2002 until 2010 she worked on projects (ENDIS-RISKS and INRAM) that assess the risk of micropollutants in estuary and marine environments. At ARCHE Consulting her expertise is situated in the field of risk assessment of organic compounds for REACH, BPD, and PPP dossiers. As a ERT certified toxicologist she also deals with human and environmental risk assessments.
Federica Iaccino (Senior Project Scientist)

Federica Iaccino graduated as Master Environmental Engineering at Polytechnic University of Turin (Italy): her thesis aimed at validating the use of specific aquatic model to assess soil ecotoxicity (RIVM, The Netherlands). She moved to Belgium to gain experience at European level and worked as environmental consultant in the automotive sector, in the framework of alternative fuels and car emissions directives. In 2007 she further improved her scientific expertise at the European Master in Risk Assessment and Risk Analysis (University of Milan, Italy): her thesis focused on the development of high quality database for fish bioconcentration factor, in order to enable analyses on alternative non-animal testing methods for deriving BCF data such as (Q)SAR models (EURAS, Belgium). Her main tasks at ARCHE Consulting are scientific and regulatory support for the implementation of chemical regulations.
Katrien Arijs (Consortium Manager)

Katrien Arijs is consortium manager at ARCHE with over 10 years of experience working in academia, consulting and the non-profit sector. Prior to joining ARCHE, Katrien worked for four years as the Science and Operational Manager for SETAC Europe, where she managed the daily affairs and business of the association and was responsible for the organisation of meetings and scientific projects. Katrien also worked as a scientific researcher at the Laboratory of Environmental Toxicology of Ghent University, as Junior Project Manager for SETAC Europe and as Advisor Environment & Health Affairs at Euras. Katrien obtained her degree in pharmaceutical sciences in 1999 at Ghent University. At ARCHE Consulting her expertise is situated in the field of consortium management for REACH.
Maxime Eliat-Eliat (Senior Project Scientist)

Maxime Eliat-Eliat graduated as Master of Science in Engineering (Chemistry) at KaHo Sint-Lieven Technologiecampus Gent in 2009. At ARCHE his main expertise area is related to REACH. He has been working on exposure scenarios but has also derived hazard thresholds (PNECs and DNELs). He has build up a large experience generating exposure scenarios using different first tier but also higher tier models like EUSES, ECETOCTRA, MEASE, CHESAR, GPM, RISKOFDERM, ART, … Next to exposure and hazard related work he has been working on different waste reports in the REACH framework. Currently his main focus is shifting to assisting companies with inquiries from ECHA regarding substance evaluation and assisting companies with applications for authorization. Next to REACH he has also been involved in the Water Framework Directive, especially in the domain of mixing zones using higher tier models like Discharge Test and CORMIX.
Lieve Claeys (Senior Project Scientist)

Lieve Claeys graduated as Master of Biomedical Science at Ghent University in 2007. She also obtained a Master in Environmental Sanitation in 2009 at the same University. At ARCHE Consulting her main expertise area encompasses REACH and BPR. She has built up a large experience collecting and evaluating available information, data gap analysis and determining human health and environmental exposure and risk characterisation. In addition Lieve is responsible for our (Q)SAR work. As an ERT certified toxicologist she gives toxicology and CLP hands-on training. Besides regulatory work, Lieve is also a certified Cradle to Cradle Material Health Assessor and manages the Cradle to Cradle projects.
Isabelle Vercaigne (Senior Project scientist)

Isabelle Vercaigne graduated as bachelor in applied computer science at Hogeschool Gent in 2003. In 2004 she obtained a postgraduate in European business policy (Hogeschool Gent) and after 2 years experience as logistic assistant she expanded her knowledge and obtained a bachelor diploma in nutrition and dietetics (Hogeschool Gent) in 2009. Isabelle focusses mainly on biocides and preparation of national authorisation dossiers, mainly in Be (Gestautor) and NL and East-European countries. Isabelle is also familiar with BPR regulation and IUCLID for biocides, SPC editor and R4BP submissions. For ARCHE Consulting, Isabelle supports the development of our own tools: MeClas (www.meclas.eu) and Biomet (www.bio-met.net).
Tineke De Wilde, PhD (Senior Project Scientist)

Tineke De Wilde graduated as Master in Bio-engineering in 2003 at Ghent University. After graduation, she worked for two years in the Laboratory of Food Chemistry (UGent) on acrylamide formation during the frying process. She obtained her PhD in Bio-engineering (UGent) in 2009 on the biopurification of pesticide contaminated water where she modeled transport of pesticides in biofilters using the transportmodel HYDRUS-1D. At ARCHE, her expertise is situated in dossier preparations for Biocides in EU and national registrations.

An Vanden Bosch graduated in 2004 as Master in Bio-Engineering, option Cell and Gene Biotechnology, at the Catholic University of Leuven. She obtained her PhD in Medical Sciences on the functional analysis of a protein involved in cell division in 2009 (KULeuven). From 2010 till 2013 she worked as a Registration Specialist, responsible for the development and registration of plant protection products. Major activities were data gap analysis, planning and follow-up of studies and field trials, human and environmental risk assessments, preparation of registration dossiers according to EU and member state specific requirements, follow-up of legislation and guidelines, liaising with national and European authorities. At ARCHE Consulting, her expertise is situated in the field of plant protection products, biocides and more in general, human health and environmental risk assessments.

Inge Huygens graduated as Master of Science in Chemistry and obtained her PhD in Physical Chemistry at Ghent University (Belgium) in 2004, where she worked at the Physical Chemistry Laboratory as Assistant Professor until 2007. From 2007 until 2015 she worked as a Regulatory Affairs Specialist for plant protection products, dealing with data gap analyses, study/field trial coordination, risk assessments and dossier preparations and follow up, both on EU and member state level. At ARCHE Consulting she will mainly focus on risk assessments and dossier preparation for plant protection products/biocides.
Barbara Dhoop (Project Scientist)

Barbara Dhoop obtained her Master degree in Chemistry in 2010 at the University of Ghent. After graduating, she worked another year as a researcher on metabolomics at the department where she performed her master thesis, developing new analytical techniques to investigate the human metabolome. Afterwards, she gained more experience in the industry as a field engineer in water treatment and as an R&D co-worker in the detergent sector. At this former job, she was responsible for all regulatory issues (REACH, CLP, labelling, biocides, …). At ARCHE Consulting she is mainly involved in biocide dossiers, both at national and EU-level.

Evy Van Ael graduated as Master in Biology in 2006 and as Master in Environmental Sanitation in 2007 at the Ghent University. After graduating she worked as a project engineer (ESHER) and an environmental surveyor (Jan De Nul). In 2009 she started her PhD at the University of Antwerp (SPHERE) on the bioaccumulation and effects of persistent organic pollutants and metals in aquatic food chains. She obtained her PhD degree in 2014. At ARCHE she will mainly focus on biocide dossiers.
Vincent Dunon (Project Scientist)

Vincent Dunon graduated in 2009 as Master in Bioscience Engineering, cell and gene biotechnology, at the KU Leuven, Belgium. Afterwards he worked for 5 years as researcher at the division of Soil and Water Management, KU Leuven, in the field of microbial degradation of plant protection products. At ARCHE Consulting his expertise is mainly situated in the domain of providing registration and consortium management support in the field of REACH.
Sabine Navis, PhD ( Project Scientist)

Sabine Navis obtained her Master degree in Earth System Science (option Environmental Toxicology) in 2006 at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. From 2007 to 2010 she was, as Ecotoxicology coordinator at Albemarle Europe sprl, mainly involved in the preparation of REACH dossiers. In 2015 she finalized her PhD at the KU Leuven in the field of aquatic toxicology, working on the effects of pesticides on dormant egg bank dynamics in zooplankton communities. At ARCHE Consulting her expertise will mainly focus on risk assessment and dossier preparation for plant protection products.
Leen Jansen, PhD (Project Scientist)

Leen Jansen graduated as Master of Science in Engineering (Biochemistry) at Hogeschool Gent in 2004. After obtaining a Master degree in Molecular Biotechnology at Ghent University in 2006, she started her PhD in the field of plant biotechnology at the VIB (Ghent University), analyzing root development in maize plants. She finalized her PhD in 2011 and continued in plant research as a post-doc at VIB, unraveling molecular mechanisms involved in leaf growth under drought stress conditions. At ARCHE she is mainly involved in risk assessment and the preparation of biocide dossiers.

Bram Peeters obtained his Master degree Biology in the field of Ecology and Physiology in 2013 at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. He has experience in the regulatory field, having worked in the Regulatory Affairs department of a pharmaceutical company. For Arche, Bram is mostly involved in dossier preparations for Biocides for national and EU-level.
Stijn Van Hees ( Project Scientist)

Stijn Van Hees graduated as master in biology at the university of Antwerp in 2002 and as master in environmental sciences at the university of Ghent in 2004. He’s previously worked as a teacher (2004-2008) and in the field of sustainable horticulture (2008-2012). Before switching to ARCHE Consulting he learned all about Biocides legislation and environmental risk assessment while working for the Belgian competent authority from 2012 to 2016. He’s been profoundly involved with national biocides legislation and the application of the biocidal products regulation in Belgium. At ARCHE Consulting Stijn puts all these valuable experiences to good use in biocides project management and environmental risk assessment.
Rita Cortvrindt ( Senior Project Scientist)

Rita Cortvrindt, graduated as Master in Science / Biology at the University of Ghent in 1983 and obtained the degree of master in Medical and Pharmaceutical Research at the Free University of Brussels in 1989. In the meantime she worked as research assistant at the University of Antwerp in the departments of Pathology (Cancer Research) and Biochemistry (In vitro Bone development). In 1994 she joined the Centre for reproductive medicine of Brussels, to set up and coordinate the Follicle Biology group, focussing on the in vitro growth, maturation and cryopreservation of oocytes. Based on that work she founded in 2002 the spinoff company EggCentris, a CRO dedicated to reproductive health and in vitro toxicology, offering services to the pharmaceutical, chemical, cosmetic and medical device industry. The last 15 years she gained expertise in (in vitro) toxicology and quality assurance. At ARCHE Consulting she will be involved in assessing risks for human health.
Karel Viaene, PhD (Project Scientist)

Karel Viaene graduated as Master in Biology at Ghent University in 2010. He successfully finished the advanced Master in Environmental Management and Sanitation program in 2011. During the next five years, he obtained his PhD at the Laboratory of Environmental Ecology and Ecotoxicology on developing population models (IBMs) to assess the effects of chemicals. At ARCHE Consulting, his modelling expertise is applied to various projects that strive to increase the use of population models in ecological risk assessments. Additionally, he is involved in the preparation of REACH, BPD, and PPP dossiers.
